Vellore Institute of Technology, commonly called VIT University is an Indian institute of higher education and a Deemed University
under Section 3 of the UGC Act. Founded in 1984, as Vellore Engineering
College, by Mr. G. Viswanathan, the institution offers 18 undergraduate
and 34 postgraduate programmes and draws students from 47 countries as
well as from every state in India. It has campuses both at Vellore and Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. The university has been consistently placed in top 10 list of Indian colleges by leading magazines like India Today and The Week[1]
The college was affiliated with Madras University and received many accolades.[which?] In 1999 Vellore Engineering College was awarded the ISO 9002 certificate for three years by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) of the Netherlands, making VEC the first educational institute in India to achieve this recognition. In June 2001 and VEC became the Vellore Institute of Technology. Later, by a statute of the government, it became VIT University.

VIT University was initially founded as Vellore Engineering College on 5 July 1984 by Mr. G Vishwanathan, a former Parliamentarian and Minister in the Government of Tamil Nadu. Started initially with a relatively small campus and only three undergraduate engineering courses — Civil, Mechanical, and Electronics and Communication — the College continued to progress under the fine leadership of G.
